I'm a sucker for a good countdown or a satisfyingly succinct list.
Here are the highlights of my own 2019—I hope you get to spend your New Year's Eve in whatever fashion fancies your personality. Adam and I are cozying up to our new fondue set and plan on binge watching a TV series. If you have any last-minute show recommendations, we'd love to hear them!
Without further adieu, I present my list of the year's favorites:
Book: The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin
Movie: Little Women (I literally just saw this on Saturday, but it really was my most favorite film of the year. I am still dying to see Booksmart, though. I feel like this could nudge out Little Women, TBH.)
Album: The Hamilton soundtrack (Somehow, these songs are perfect for writing, working out, driving... They're just perfect, okay? They're perfect.)
Song: "Hold Your Head Up High" by Darlingside (They played this song at the very end of the This Is Us Season 3 finale, and it literally gave me chills.)
TV series: It's a tie! Stranger Things, Season 3 (I was pleasantly surprised how brilliantly they pulled off the summertime setting) and Fleabag, Season 2 (If you haven't watched this series, season 1 is great, but season 2 is phenomenal; plus, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is so, so charming and delightful)
Meal: Dare I choose just one? I'm going to go with our first anniversary dinner at Boca, not only for the superb food, but because that entire evening was magical.
Vacation: It was a year full of travel—Philadelphia, Miami, Scottsdale and Arizona Rim Country, Albany, Santa Fe, Long Lake, Keene, Greece, and New York—but how do you compete with an Aegean sailing trip? I've never seen such beauty, and the kind people and delicious foods were simply cherries (err, kalamata olives?) on top.
Podcast: Criminal by Phoebe Judge
Trend: (This is more 2018, but I do live in Cincinnati [Mark Twain famously said he would like to live in Cincinnati when the world comes to an end since we are so many years behind the times], so this seems fine!) Big brows, of course.
Celebrity: Deb Perelman. I am thirteen years late to the Smitten Kitchen party, but Deb's recipes and writing are as warm and comforting as a bowl of chicken noodle soup.
Quote: "Remember the days you prayed for the things you have now."
Cheers to you, 2019!
